I interviewed the Ghanaian artist El Anatsui for Art Quarterly’s Autumn issue, ahead of his Tate Modern Turbine Hall Commission, which opens 10 October 2023. We discuss his background and education, the influence of the Sankofa movement on his work, why he uses discarded materials, and the role of the sugar trade in the establishment of the Tate Gallery in the late 19th century.
